The Hallicrafters TW-500 is a great example of the portable tube type shortwave radios of the 1950's. This one was made in 1955 and weights over 17 pounds!
I bought it off of Ebay. It needed a bit of restoration and alignment, but it now works as good as new. It's hard to imagine that in 1955 this was about the only way you get get current information if you were in a remote or isolated area. Voice of America, Radio Moscow, or the BBC were what you would have listened to, depending on the particular bias you wanted!
